To help you pursue industry-recognized PM certifications, such as PMP/CAPM and the Lean Six Sigma Green Belt, we’ve compiled the following tips and guidelines.
Project Management Professional (PMP)® certification is the globally recognized industry standard that can help you expand your skills and take you further in your career. You should consider getting certified if you want to:
- Stay up-to-date in the field by learning best practices, standards, techniques and current trends.
- Enhance job performance with proven strategies and in-demand skills.
- Set yourself apart in the job market.
- Demonstrate your commitment to the field and your drive to excel.
Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)® certification is designed for those starting out in the field of project management.
Although University of Phoenix does not offer these certifications, here are some important things to know about getting these Project Management Institute (PMI)® certifications.
To sit for the PMP test, PMI requires one of the following:
- A four-year degree and at least three years of PM experience, with 4,500 hours leading and directing projects and 35 hours of PM education
- A secondary degree (high school diploma, associate degree or global equivalent) and at least five years of PM experience, with 7,500 hours leading and directing projects and 35 hours of PM education
Your project management experience must span all phases of the project life cycle — initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, and closing.
The PMP certification is valid for three years. Recertification requires 60 hours of PDUs. Our noncredit courses can help you satisfy this requirement.
Entry-level project managers seeking CAPM certification need a secondary degree, at least 1,000 of PM experience and 23 hours of PM education to sit for the exam.
The CAPM credential is valid for five years. During the fifth year, certified PMs are required to retake and pass the exam again, which covers standard information as well as updates to the PMBOK® Guide. No PDUs are required.
For more information on eligibility, see the PMP Handbook.
